Community music school

Piano, violin and more, close to home

Treble is a community music school above the hardware store in Stewartville. Six teachers cover keys, strings, winds, voice and percussion for families who work in the clinics and offices of Rochester, for people new to town and for anyone who wants a lesson near home.

  • Ages 5 and up
  • Lessons of 30, 45 or 60 minutes
  • Weekday evenings and Saturdays

Keys

Piano is where most of our students start. Lessons begin on the school's pianos, and your teacher helps you decide when a keyboard or a piano at home makes sense.

Teachers

Six teachers, five families of instruments

Every student has one regular teacher. Here is who teaches what.

  • Shota Hirose, director, seated at a grand piano

    Shota Hirose

    Director; piano and music theory

Shota started Treble and teaches piano and music theory to beginners, to adults returning to the keyboard and to students who want to read music with more ease. He meets every new student at the placement visit.

  • Freda Cornwell, piano and harp teacher, seated with a harp

    Freda Cornwell

    Piano and harp

Freda teaches beginning piano and the harp at an unhurried pace, to children and adults alike. She plays harp at weddings and church services around the county and brings that repertoire into the lesson room.

  • Siyu Xue, violin, guitar and ukulele teacher, holding a violin and bow

    Siyu Xue

    Violin, guitar and ukulele

Siyu teaches violin to young beginners and guitar and ukulele to older students and to families who want to play together. She sets up each student's instrument herself and shows parents how to help at home.

  • Marisol Martinez, violin, viola and cello teacher, holding a violin

    Marisol Martinez

    Violin, viola and cello

Marisol teaches the bowed strings, from a first open string to playing with others. She teaches in English and in Spanish, and she is glad to meet families who are new to town and want a lesson close to home.

  • Wilbur Atwell, wind instrument teacher, seated at a table with a clarinet

    Wilbur Atwell

    Clarinet, flute, saxophone and recorder

Wilbur teaches the wind instruments and helps school band students with their parts. He starts every wind student with how to hold the instrument and how to breathe, and he will tell you honestly when a student is not yet big enough for one.

  • Gunnar Ericson, voice and percussion teacher, standing beside a piano

    Gunnar Ericson

    Voice, drums and hand percussion

Gunnar teaches singers of every age and drummers from their first rhythms. A practice pad is in every drum lesson, and he helps families choose a quiet one for home.

The building

Up one flight, above the hardware store

Use the green door beside the hardware store on Main Street and climb the stairs. At the top there is a bench and a front desk, and six lesson rooms with a window in each door. Parents wait on the bench, and parking is behind the building.

Questions

What families ask first

How old does a student need to be?

Most students start at five or six with piano, violin or ukulele. Wind instruments and the cello usually wait until a student is a little bigger, and your teacher will tell you honestly what fits. Adults are welcome on every instrument.

Do we need our own instrument?

Not at first. Ask your teacher before you buy or rent anything. The school rents violins, violas, cellos, flutes and clarinets by the term, and a keyboard or a practice pad is enough to start piano or drums at home. Our tuition page explains rental.

How are students matched with a teacher?

At the placement visit a teacher listens, talks with you about what you hope to play and then we suggest the teacher and the weekly time that fit your week. If a teacher's week is full, we offer another teacher while you wait.

What is a placement visit?

A short visit with a teacher, with no preparation needed. The teacher hears you play or sing, or hears what you hope to play, and you talk about times. A parent can stay for the whole visit.

How does tuition work, and how do we leave?

Tuition depends on the format and the length of the lesson, and our figures are on the enrollment page. To leave, tell the front desk a month before your last lesson. The tuition page has the details.

Come and hear the building

Book a placement visit, or call the front desk during lesson hours and we will find a time.
