How our lesson rooms work

The checks our teachers hold and the routines we follow, in plain words.

  • Ages 5 years and up

Staff checks and training

  • Background checks
  • CPR and first aid
  • Mandated reporter training

Safety routines

  • Windows and open doors

Every lesson room has a window in its door, or the door stays open.

  • Parents may sit in

A parent is welcome to sit in on any lesson, and there is a bench outside the rooms for waiting.

  • Who may collect a student

We hand a student only to the grown-ups on your pickup list, and we ask for ID from anyone we do not know.

  • When a student is ill

A student with a fever stays home. Tell the teacher by text or a call, and we offer the time to the waitlist if it is a long absence.

Family policies

Photos of your child

We ask your written permission before we share any photo of your child, on this site, in newsletters or on social media, and you can change your answer at any time. We never put a child's name with a photo, and the photos on this site are examples until we replace them with our own.

When to keep your child home

Please keep your student home with a fever, a stomach bug or a bad cough, and let the teacher know. Singers and wind players, tell your teacher about a cold before the lesson.

Closures for weather and holidays

We close for a few holidays and over the winter break, and for severe weather. We text families by early afternoon when weather closes the hall, and a lesson the school cancels is made up.

Drop-off and pickup

Parents of younger students walk them up to the lesson room and wait on the bench or downstairs. We hand a student only to the grown-ups on the pickup list you give us, and we ask for ID from anyone we do not know.

Watching lessons and recitals

A parent may sit in on any lesson, and we ask the parents of the youngest students to stay for the first few. Recitals are open to families and friends: arrive early, silence phones and clap at the end of each piece.

Leaving the program

Tell us in writing a month before your last lesson, by email or at the front desk. We will explain what happens to a term in progress.

What to wear and bring

Wear what you can play in. Closed shoes for drum lessons, and comfortable clothes for everyone. Recital days are concert dress, which means a clean shirt and trousers or a skirt.

Screens and phones

Phones stay in a pocket or a bag during a lesson. A teacher may ask to record a passage so you can practice from it at home.

Questions about how we work?

Ask at the front desk or at your placement visit. We would rather you ask.
