Questions we hear most
How old does a student need to be?
Most students start at five or six with piano, violin or ukulele. Wind instruments and the cello usually wait until a student is a little bigger, and your teacher will tell you honestly what fits. Adults are welcome on every instrument.
How long is a lesson?
A lesson is 30, 45 or 60 minutes, once a week. Younger beginners usually start with 30 minutes. The placement visit is where the teacher and you settle on a length.
Do we need our own instrument?
Not at first. Ask your teacher before you buy or rent anything. The school rents violins, violas, cellos, flutes and clarinets by the term, and a keyboard or a practice pad is enough to start piano or drums at home. Our tuition page explains rental.
How are students matched with a teacher?
At the placement visit a teacher listens, talks with you about what you hope to play and then we suggest the teacher and the weekly time that fit your week. If a teacher's week is full, we offer another teacher while you wait.
Can a parent sit in on a lesson?
Yes. A parent is welcome to sit in on any lesson, and we ask the parents of the youngest students to stay for the first few. There is a bench for waiting outside the lesson rooms.
What is a placement visit?
A short visit with a teacher, with no preparation needed. The teacher hears you play or sing, or hears what you hope to play, and you talk about times. A parent can stay for the whole visit.
Do students have to play in recitals?
No. Recitals are in December and May, and students who would like to play choose one piece with their teacher. Others come to listen and clap.
What happens if a lesson is missed?
Tell your teacher as early as you can. How a missed lesson is made up depends on who missed it, and the tuition page explains the make-up window.
Can an adult start lessons?
Yes. Many of our students are adults who stopped playing years ago or never started. Evening and Saturday times are set aside for them.
How does tuition work, and how do we leave?
Tuition depends on the format and the length of the lesson, and our figures are on the enrollment page. To leave, tell the front desk a month before your last lesson. The tuition page has the details.
