How tuition works

Here is how tuition is set and billed, so there are no surprises. Our figures are on the enrollment page.

  • Tuition depends on the lesson's format, its length and the teacher. A private lesson, a shared lesson and a group class are priced differently, and a 30, 45 or 60 minute lesson each has its own rate. Our figures are on the enrollment page, and your teacher goes over them with you at the placement visit.

    • Format: private, shared or group class

    • Length: 30, 45 or 60 minutes

  • Registration

A registration fee opens the student's file, covers the placement visit and holds the first scheduling of a weekly time. It is due when you register on our enrollment page, once a year.

  • Billing

Tuition is billed monthly, and the school sends a notice before each bill. You can set up autopay on the enrollment page. Group classes and theory classes are billed by the term.

  • Help with tuition

Financial aid is available, and we would rather you ask than guess. Ask the front desk how to apply, or bring it up at the placement visit.

  • Two students in a family

A family with two students can ask for lessons back to back, and two students can share a lesson. We talk through the times at the placement visit.

  • Withdrawing

Tell the front desk in writing a month before your last lesson, by email or at the desk, and we will explain what happens to a term in progress. Group classes and theory classes end with the term.

  • Missed classes and make-ups

When a student misses a lesson and tells the teacher in advance, the teacher offers a make-up in the same month where the week allows. When a teacher misses a lesson, the school makes it up. Group classes and ensembles are not made up.

  • Instrument rental is an extra, offered by the term for violins, violas, cellos, flutes and clarinets, so a growing student does not need to buy too soon. Other costs are music books your teacher chooses, and the printed programs and hall for the recitals. Each has its own figure on the enrollment page.

Instruments

Rent first, buy when you know

A growing student changes size, and not every student keeps going. Renting helps while you decide.

  • Bowed strings

The school keeps violins, violas and cellos in the smaller sizes and rents them by the term. When a student grows, we swap the size.

  • Flutes and clarinets

Rent a school flute or clarinet and let the teacher check it each week. We help you decide whether to buy after the first term.

  • Keyboards and pianos

Ask the teacher before you buy. A full-size keyboard with weighted keys is a good start, and a piano can wait.

  • Guitars, ukuleles and drums

Buy a guitar or ukulele that stays in tune, and start drums on a practice pad. Siyu and Gunnar will look at what you find.
